The trumpet shall be heard on high
The dead shall live, the living die,
And Music shall untune the sky!
--John Dryden (1631-1700)
Video game music, though dismissed by some as simply noise, can be of the highest compositional quality. Every once in awhile, I used to get it in my head to track a particular song or two. Sometimes I finished these undertakings, sometimes I didn't. I have a directory filled with modules that I've started but never finished, and soon I hope to delete it. Why, you ask? And why haven't I tracked any new video game mods in over a year? I'll tell you why. It's because tracking console mods from anything older than the PlayStation is obselete. At long last we can rip songs from games and play them just like MODs or MP3's or anything else. Some wonderful innovations by some great emulator authors include the SPC format for SNES music and the NSF format for NES music. The best resource I've found for both players and music collections of this type is, of course, Zophar's Domain, which has been my site of choice for everything related to the Emulation scene ever since EMU News Service went down. Zophar has the most complete collection of SPC Music and the players to hear 'em. Also, NSF Tunes and the players for those. I recommend ZD-spc for playing SPC files and the NoseFart plugin for WinAmp to play the NSF files. Enjoy!
Loath am I, however, to take offline my hard work, so if you need a second opinion, here they are! (All files are in zip format and may be extracted with a program such as WinZip.)
To download, right-click the link and choose "Save As...". Or whatever. These modules were made with Triton/Starbreeze FastTracker II and sound best if played with WinAmp or the ModPlug Player.
